STARTUP STORY
HOW DELINIFY IS CHANGING ENVIRONMENTAL DECISION-MAKING

Phil Clunies-Ross didn’t start out imagining he would launch a tech startup. “I was a biomedical scientist originally,” he says. “But by 26, I realised my real passion was the environment, so I went back to university and ended up doing a PhD studying glacial-fed rivers in New Zealand and Antarctica.”
Following his doctorate, Phil worked across startups and councils, honing a rare combination of scientific expertise and practical understanding of environmental management. “I’ve always been fascinated by how data can tell a story—but I kept seeing it sit on the shelf, underutilised,” he explains. “Reports were generic, slow to produce, and often not tailored to the people who needed the insights most.”
Teaching Himself to Build a Solution
Seeing the same inefficiencies repeated, Phil took matters into his own hands. Over six months, he taught himself programming, completed online courses, and began experimenting with projects that would eventually become Delinify.
“The idea was simple but powerful,” he says. “Take complex environmental data, combine it with expert knowledge, and produce something meaningful that a user can actually act on." Delinify allows users to input their own spatial data, layer expert context, and generate white-labelled reports tailored to specific sites or projects. It’s not just automation; it’s personalised science communication designed to inform decisions in land and water management, consulting, and other industries handling complex datasets.
"I wanted to build a system that could do in seconds what used to take weeks—and save thousands of dollars in the process.”
Data: The Untapped Goldmine
Behind all this growth lies what Barney calls their “hidden asset”, a rich, underutilised data set showing real-world spending patterns across New Zealand’s café sector.
He sees a future where Coffee Stamp moves beyond digital loyalty to become a data insights company, helping café owners understand their customers in ways never before possible.
“We can show a café not just who’s coming in, but how loyalty drives their business over time,” he says. “There’s real power in that.”
The Power of Early Support
While Phil had the technical skills to build the platform, he didn’t navigate the startup world alone. “I’ve always valued having a sounding board,” he says. “I’ve spoken to business coaches in the past, and connecting with Dr Dianne Jones through Startup Aotearoa has been invaluable. She doesn’t hand you answers—she challenges you to get out there and test your ideas, to put yourself in front of potential partners and clients.”
Phil has also leaned on former colleagues. “Having people I can bounce ideas off and sanity-check with has kept me grounded. It’s one thing to build a great product in isolation, but understanding how it will be received in the real world is another challenge entirely.”

From Shadow Work to Soft Launch
For 18 months, Phil has worked exclusively on building Delinify. “It’s been a real privilege to dedicate myself full-time to this, keeping my costs low and bootstrapping the development into something really robust.”
Now, he’s stepping out of the shadows. “I’ve started introducing the platform to early users and conferences. That’s where the real feedback begins,” he says. “It’s exciting - and a little nerve-wracking - to finally show people what I’ve built and hear what they think. Their input will shape the next phases of development.”
By automating complex reporting while keeping expert oversight, Delinify gives professionals control and insight without sacrificing quality. “There’s a huge amount of data out there that never gets used properly,” Phil notes. “If we can help government, consultancies, and organisations utilising spatial data make faster, better-informed decisions, the impact could be enormous - from improving water quality to optimising land use.”
"It’s about empowering people to make decisions that lead to real-world, positive outcomes. That’s what motivates me every day.”
Looking Ahead: Scaling Globally
Phil sees a clear trajectory for Delinify. “The platform is built to pivot, adapt, and scale. Ideally, this will be a global tool, helping scientists and organisations around the world unlock insights from their environmental data.”
He’s thinking about strategic partnerships, beta testing with key clients, and eventually exploring investment to expand development. “I’ve built the foundation, and now it’s time to let the platform grow, to learn from users, and to reach a point where Delinify can truly transform the way people interact with data.”
From Antarctic rivers to the heart of environmental decision-making, Phil Clunies-Ross’s journey is a story of curiosity, persistence, and purpose. Delinify has already begun turning complex datasets into actionable insights. With continued iteration, support, and real-world testing, it has the potential to redefine how environmental data informs decisions worldwide, helping organisations make faster, better-informed choices.
