STARTUP STORY
STREAMLINING BUILDING MANAGEMENT

In the dynamic world of property technology, SeeStuff is emerging as a game-changer, transforming how commercial properties are managed. We sat down with James Wallace, Co-Founder and Managing Director of SeeStuff, to discuss his journey from consultant to founder, and how Startup Aotearoa's support has been instrumental in their growth.
What is SeeStuff, and what problem are you solving?
"In the commercial property space, buildings often rely on 20 or more disconnected software systems to operate across everyone involved in owning, operating and maintaining each building. We've developed an integrated ecosystem that streamlines these systems into one cohesive platform, making life easier for everyone involved in building management."
What inspired you to tackle such a complex issue in the commercial property industry?
“It was a buildup of frustration. After years of working as consultants in this space, we repeatedly encountered the same issues and gaps in existing solutions. One day, we decided to take matters into our own hands and build something from scratch. It was a journey filled with trial and error, but each stumble taught us valuable lessons."

How did your background in consultancy influence your startup journey?
"It was invaluable! Working as consultants allowed us to validate problems and needs before launching our product. I’d recommend that aspiring entrepreneurs consider consulting first if possible; it provides a unique vantage point to identify pain points and create a strong MVP. It's essentially a pre-business phase that accelerates the entire process."
As a founder, you wear many hats. What unexpected skills have you had to develop along the way?
"The steepest learning curve has been in marketing and social media. Google and YouTube have become my best friends! While my co-founders brought tech and operational expertise, we had to adapt quickly to navigate the marketing landscape. This push outside our comfort zone has been both challenging and rewarding."
You've received coaching through Startup Aotearoa. What prompted you to seek guidance?
"We recognised that we couldn't see our blind spots. Most feedback we received came from people closely tied to our business, and we wanted fresh perspectives that would challenge our thinking. Through Startup Aotearoa, we connected with our coach, Chris O’Neill at Startup Aotearoa. I told him that if I left a session feeling slightly annoyed by his probing questions, that would mean we were making progress!"
How has startup coaching impacted your journey?
"We've had about six sessions, and each has been invaluable. Chris has challenged us to think critically about our strategies. As a team, we've been able to dissect our challenges, re-evaluate our decisions, and come back stronger. The outside perspective from Chris has pushed us to think differently and adapt our approach."
"The startup journey can be lonely, but the support network we've found through Startup Aotearoa has been a game-changer. Their guidance, along with insights from the broader startup community, has helped us avoid pitfalls and seize opportunities more effectively. We've learned that success isn't just about having a great idea—it's about having the right support and guidance to turn that idea into reality."

Chris O'Neill - Startup Aotearoa Coach
"I told my coach that if I left a session feeling slightly annoyed by his probing questions, that would mean we were making progress!"
What’s the next big milestone on your roadmap?
"We're currently doing well in New Zealand, with nearly 3,000 properties in the system, and our immediate goal is to break into the Australian market. With Startup Aotearoa's guidance, we're also in the process of establishing an advisory board. They've helped us realise that we need diverse voices to avoid creating an echo chamber, and we're now connecting with the right expertise to help navigate our next phase."
Let’s talk long-term vision. Where do you see SeeStuff in five years?
"We’re re-evaluating our goals and aiming higher. Initially, we thought our five-year plan would involve growth in New Zealand and Australia, but given our recent traction, we now envision entering European and U.S. markets within that timeframe. The signs are promising, and we’re determined to seize these opportunities."
Any advice for other founders considering seeking support from Startup Aotearoa?
"Don't hesitate! The perspectives and connections you gain are invaluable. Through Startup Aotearoa, we've not only received coaching but also connected with a community of fellow founders and experts who understand the challenges we face. It's about more than just business advice—it's about joining a supportive ecosystem that wants to see you succeed."
